| 11/07/2005 - FSA (Food Standards Agency) EU Regulations |
The new regulations are set to change the way game & venison has been handled. The New regulations are still unclear although Game dealers will have to be of Export standard before they can trade as Approved Game Handling Businesses, this will effectively cut Local Licensed Game dealers from around 6000 to 40 who are already at the Export standard (AGHE). AGHE businesses will also have to have a vet to inspect carcases and game- the inspection often costing as much or more than the revenue raised from roe, muntjac and young fallow and sika.
Hopefully a derogation written into the proposed EEC regulation will allow local licensed game dealers to continue trading.
All sales of game & venison will still be regulated by The Game and Deer Acts and The Game Dealers Acts making it illegal to sell to anyone other than a licenced game dealer. The game dealer can then sell to the public.
DEFRA & FSA have been asked to clarify the regulations and how they will work.
Details of their replies will hopefully be available later in the month. |
